Lined with coarse fabric and glue, retouch in Jesus and in some areas of flesh scattered throughout at bottom, crackle, cupping, cleavage, flaking at edges, abrasions, small nail holes at left edge, patches upper right, light areas cleaned, weave emphasis caused during lining; frame with losses to carving and gilding, pest damage, abrasions. ELIZAB...Large Italian oil on canvas Baroque religious painting depicting the Holy Family with Mary holding the infant Jesus as he reaches out to bless young John the Baptist. Saint Joseph puts his hands on the young boy's shoulder while Saint Elizabeth stands behind. They stand in front of a classical column with a red garment and cloudy sky in the background. Label verso, "Louis Pisani's Picture Galleries". Housed in an ornate gilt frame with gadrooning, egg and dart, and acanthus leaf decoration. Sight: 41 1/2" H x 35" W. Framed: 57" H x 50" W. Italian, 19th century.

Condition:
Canvas with wear consistent with age. Some buckling to canvas, overall craquelure, and heavy varnish. Two areas of fire/burn damage near Mary's face, largest 4 1/2". Area of inpainting in lower right corner and surrounding Young John the Baptist. Some abrasion to the perimeter of canvas and white residue in the center, likely removable. Painting is loose in the frame. Frame with some overall wear, light cracking, losses to decoration, and repair. Largest area of loss approximately 3" long, middle-right.
